Instructions

Hello boys and girls. In science we have been learning about animal adaptations and how animals adapt in their environment to survive. We learned about how some animals camouflage, hibernate and/or migrate because it enables them to better survive within their surroundings.

For this blog, you will click and pick ONE animal from the National Geographic website listed below. You will research your animal using National Geographic website, and one other website that you will identify on your own. You will then answer the following questions based on the research of your animal. Remember to start a new paragraph for each question and write complete sentences.

                                                                                       National Geographic

 1.Name of the animal chosen.

 2. Describe 3 characteristics of the chosen animal. What does it look like? How much does it weigh? How fast does it run?

 3. Where does this animal live?

4. What is the lifespan of the animal?

5. How does this animal adapt to its environment? Does this animal camouflage? Does it hibernate and/or migrate?
6. Include the website that you used to research more information about your animal.

Please add 2-4 pictures of your animal in its environment.

Cheetahs

               1.    Cheetah

2.    Cheetahs are tan in color with black spots all over their bodies. They have small heads and ears and typical tear stripes that stretch from the corner of the eye to the side of the nose. There shoulder is about 2 ½ -3 feet. Its tail measures 26 to 33 inches (66 to 84 centimeters) long. Adult cheetahs weight about 86-143 pounds. A cheetah can reach the speed of about 60 or 70 miles an hour over short distances.

3.    Cheetahs live in open grasslands and bushy areas in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

4.    The life span of the cheetah is 10-12 years.

5.    Cheetahs rely on tall grasses for camouflage when hunting.  These animals are more active in the day and hunt mostly during the late morning or early evening. Adult cheetahs camouflage their cubs in the grass, protecting them from the predators. Mothers move their cubs to new hiding places every few days. The cheetah's excellent eyesight helps it find prey during the day. Sometimes it perches on high places and watches for prey. Cheetahs eat small- to medium-size animals, such as hares, impalas, wildebeest calves, and gazelles. Cheetahs knock their prey to the ground and kill with a suffocating bite to the neck. They must eat quickly before they lose the kills to other bigger or more aggressive carnivores.
